Elisava, Faculty of Design and Engineering of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute of Cork Foundation present to Palafrugell Cork Museum one exhibition of the best designs and prototypes of products made with cork by the students of the 4th year of the Degree in Design and the Degree in Industrial Design Engineering (Course 2020 – 2021).
The main objective of the subject was to introduce and understand design by reinterpreting a raw material, understanding its properties, unique characteristics and their processes. The ICSuro Foundation collaborated by giving the introductory lesson on cork and its possibilities in the world of design at the beginning of the subject and providing samples of the raw material for the students to explore and work with.
This collaboration responds to one of the founding objectives of the ICSuro, which is to train and spread the word about the material. By the president of the Foundation, Joan J. Puig, "this collaboration with Elisava demonstrates the endless possibilities that cork offers in the field of design and confirms that it is necessary to bet on young talented designers to encourage the use of cork, a natural, recyclable and sustainable 100% material that is a value on the rise".
The "Elisava x ICSuro" exhibition collects some of the best designs and prototypes that emerged as part of the "Product Technology III" subject. All are focused on responding to real needs based on the properties of cork: low density and lightness, impermeability, good thermal and acoustic insulation, high resistance to movement, cushioning capacity, elasticity, durability or natural origin.
Among the projects that have emerged is "Planta't" (Berta Abad, Laura Masdeu, Júlia Vera), which consists of cork discs mixed with seeds to grow at home, VIFTE (Hannah Adib, Marco Gesualdo, Helena Lehn), a product portable to isolate yourself from noise in social environments or La Surera (NilsKamming, Liam Kelly), a backpack designed to improve comfort in urban spaces.
The opening of the exhibition was attended by students who participated in the exhibition. On behalf of Elisava, the Academic Director Albert Fuster, the Head of Relations with Companies and the Academy Cristina Taverner and the Professor of the subject Salva Fàbregas attended; representing the ICSuro Foundation, its President, Joan J. Puig, its Director, Albert Hereu and Guillem Genover (trustee) and the Mayor of Palafrugell (and member of the foundation's board of trustees), Josep Piferrer, attended.
The Institut Català del Suro (ICSuro) is a non-profit, scientific private foundation whose mission is to promote the cork sector.
It has three main lines of action: research and research on the cork and other applications, quality controls of the corks through the Cork Center Laboratory and communication for the dissemination and promotion of the conservation and responsible use of corks . For more information: www.icsuro.com
