Despite the stoppage of face-to-face educational activity caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the Fundació Institut Català del Suro has maintained its commitment to training and disseminating the organization's activities to schoolchildren.
The head of microbiology and research technician at the Fundació Institut Català del Suro, Maria Verdum, was in charge of giving a webinar during the month of June to more than sixty students from the three high school lines of the Institute of Cassà de la Selva to publicize the activity of the ICSuro as well as the industry and the sector. This activity, which took place over three days, is part of the subject "Sciences of the contemporary world", which deals with culture and the environment from a sustainable perspective. The ICSuro was the closing activity of the subject.
New model of virtual visits
This virtual session model has emerged as an alternative to the face-to-face visits that had been organized before covid-19 with schools and institutes in cork municipalities and who are interested in discovering the functions and objectives of an organization such as the ICSuro Foundation, which becomes a meeting point between the forestry and industrial sectors and entrepreneurs in new cork applications.
The virtual visits have maintained their essence and despite the fact that the visit to the facilities has had to be renounced, the new format has opened the door to extend the sessions electronically to other centers or institutes further away that may be interested in learning about a sustainable industry such as cork, which is a paradigm of the circular economy and which is the nerve center of the state cork industry in Catalonia.
