The playground on the provincial road in Cassà de la Selva has been the first playground in Spain recently paved with corks collected from the recycling campaign carried out in the municipality, as part of the project FUTURECORK, which leads the Catalan Cork Institute Foundation.
The first results of the cork collection pilot test in the municipalities of Cassà de la Selva and Palafrugell are already beginning to bear tangible fruit.
Thanks to the caps recovered from establishments in the municipality of Cassà de la Selva, Gironès region, it has recently been possible to pave the children's playground located at the entrance to the town, next to the provincial road, thus closing a cycle of collection, recycling and local reuse with direct benefit for citizens.
The corks, which have been collected since November in both municipalities, serve as a test bed to test a selective collection system for cork stoppers.
The pilot test was initially deployed at 36 collection points in Palafrugell and 23 in Cassà de la Selva —including supermarkets, restaurants, specialized stores, businesses and educational centers—, where citizens could deposit used corks in identified containers. Given the good reception and involvement of the social and commercial fabric, the project has been progressively extended to other establishments and localities interested in taking part.
The results achieved so far are very positive:
- Palafrugell: 46,749 caps collected (256.05 kg)
- Cassà de la Selva: 15,464 corks collected (84.95 kg)
This cork collection and recovery action will last throughout this year and will culminate in the preparation of a technical and economic report that will collect the conclusions of the experience in order to propose a replicable model of integrated cork management on a state scale.
