Last December 23, we started the collection of corks at the Plusfresc supermarkets in Mollerussa and two in Barcelona. The campaign lasted until last January 7. The supermarkets in Barcelona were the one on Via Augusta 188 and the one on Carrer Teodora Lamadrid 21-23, while the one in Mollerussa was the one on Carrer Ferrer i Busquets, no. 9.
This initiative was part of the project for the implementation of a cork return system in the framework of the circular economy.
The main objective is to determine the feasibility of applying a cork collection system and new valorization alternatives in order topromote its recycling. Corks are currently managed in the organic fraction of waste.
Equally, it is considered to obtain the best option for recycling corks from a technical perspective and economic profitability for obtaining products or applications of corks once crushed. This process must integrate all the economic and social agents involved in the process of collecting, recycling and revaluation of corks.
For this pilot test, methacrylate ballot boxes were created with an illustration explaining the campaign, accompanied by leaflets with information on the importance of cork as an example of a circular economy:
