The Institut Català del Suro is the entity in charge of organizing the next edition of the biannual CORK IN SCIENCE international congress, which will be held in May 2019 in Palafrugell.
With the title: CORK IN SCIENCE 2019: New trends in cork: From the Wine Industry to the new applications, this congress will be aimed at researchers, universities, cork companies, wineries and designers.
It will have two distinct parts: Several presentation sessions, of a more scientific nature, and practical sessions in the form of workshops, where direct applications to companies will be worked on.
The R+D+i Department presents two works at Cork in Science 2017
The past International Congress of Science and Applications in Cork – CSA2017 (International Conference on Cork Science and its Applications) took place in Aveiro (Portugal) last September 7 and 8. The biologist Maria Verdum, from the R+D+i department of the Institut Català del Suro (ICSuro), gave a conference and presented a poster.

The aim of the conference was to develop a forum for discussions between young and senior scientists, academics and industry, generating contacts and creating new synergies. For this reason, CSA2017 invited academics, designers, entrepreneurs and industry to meet and exchange ideas and solutions. A warm and intense scientific environment with a common factor: cork as a material with multiple applications. The conference was held in different sessions in the same room. A poster session was also held.
In addition, four outstanding keynote speakers (representatives) were invited, covering various sciences and applications of cork material: Professor José Sousa from the University of Porto (Portugal), Dr. Emanuel Fernandes from the University of Minho (Portugal), Dr. Mariusz Ptak from Politechnika Wroclawska (Poland) and Dra. Susana Silva, from Amorim Cork Composites (Portugal).
ICSuro exhibited two innovative works in cork. On the one hand, a was presented poster on the use of cork by-product as absorbent material for pesticides and heavy metals resulting from the process of making wine and cava (The use of cork waste as a sorbent for pesticides and heavy metals generated during the wine manufacturing process). This study is part of the European project ECORKWASTE, LIFE14 ENV/ES/000460 (http://www.ecorkwaste.eu/ ).
On the other hand, he made one conference on the study of revaluation of low-quality Catalan cork as a material in 3D additive technology (Revaluation Catalan low quality cork feedstock additive technology, 3D) that ICSuro is doing together with 3D Spider Print as part of a circular economy project of the Department of Land and Sustainability (TES/1275/2016).
