The SUPERCHEM, the research project on the application of the circular economy in cosmetic assets by means of by-products of the cork sector developed by the company Biogründl and the Institut Català del Suro Foundation, has been included in the catalog "Leading Circular Economy Solutions in Catalonia". The document, presented by Catalonia Trade & Investment, is a collection of the 100 most innovative practices in the circular economy that have been promoted in Catalonia and that are destined to address the challenges of the future and was presented last November at the virtual conference "A Taste of CE Hotspot Catalonia".
Cork applied to cosmetics
SUBERCHEM is a pioneering project in Catalonia that involves the extraction of polyphenols, antioxidant substances present in cork, to incorporate them into cosmetics and take advantage of their anti-ageing properties. The project is based on the use of by-products of the cork industry that until now were not considered valuable to give them a new use and thus contribute to the circular economy, which mitigates the environmental impact and irreversible damage to the climate and biodiversity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
