The municipalities of Cassà de la Selva i Palafrugell will be the seat of the pilot test that the Fundació Institut Català del Suro is starting this November in order to test a collection system for corks to recycle. The activity is part of the forestry bioeconomy project FUTURECORK, which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union - NextGenerationEU.
The pilot test will be deployed in around fifty establishments such as supermarkets, hotels, specialist shops or businesses between the two municipalities, where citizens can deposit used caps in identification containers. The list of collection points can be consulted on the website of the Town Councils of Palafrugell and Cassà de la Selva or www.futurecork.es.
Expected results
This action will last for a year and will have as a final result a technical and economic report that collects the conclusions drawn in order to successfully implement an integrated management system of corks at the state level.
Regarding the return of the pilot test to the municipalities, the corks that are recovered will be used to apply a pavement made from recycled corks in a children's park or to the tree stumps in each of the two localities.
