8,901 corks: success of the cork recycling campaign promoted by ICSuro as sustainability partner of the BWW

In the area of sustainability, ICSuro has once again coordinated the selective collection of cork stoppers at the BWW. This year, as a notable novelty, they have distributed 1,350 containers, one for each exhibitor, to facilitate the correct separation of the caps. The ICSuro team carried out the daily collection, visiting the stands at the end of each day and centralizing the caps in the urns located at the entrance to the main pavilion, which showed the evolution of the collection volume during the three days.

Thanks to this device during Barcelona Wine Week 2026, a total of 8,901 corks (49.4 kg) that can be managed properly and continue to provide environmental value. This fact represents a 6% reduction of the carbon footprint associated with caps.

ICSuro promotes several projects to give a second life to these cork stoppers, aimed at transforming used cork into new materials and applicationsIn this sense, the entity has advanced in the development of solutions such as pavements for playgrounds, the use of crushed cork in urban tree saplings to improve water retention and soil health, as well as new applications in architecture and bioconstruction.

“We are committed to ensuring that each bottle cap is not waste, but a resource. Cork is a natural, renewable and recyclable material that can continue to capture carbon and generate environmental benefits well beyond its first use.”, highlights Alba Balcells, director of the institute.

Thus, The Catalan Cork Institute reaffirms its leadership as a benchmark in innovation, sustainability and knowledge transfer, and consolidates its role as a strategic ally of the wine sector in building a more sustainable future.
